Hats for Dr. Seuss Day!

It's Dr. Seuss week at my kids school.  Last week they were selling hats that the kids wear to school this Friday.  Of course I didn't buy them, because I knew I could make them so much cheaper!

To make your own Cat Hat for Dr. Seuss day, you will need:

Red and white felt
Sewing machine and matching thread
Iron

Start by cutting your felt.  In red cut 3 strips.  3" x 22" long.  Also cut 1 circle about 7" in diameter.  (I found a bowl that was about that size and traced it)

In white cut 2 strips 3"x22" long and 2 large circles about 13" in diameter.  (find a platter about that size!)  Then trace your red circle in the center and cut out.

Now you are ready to sew.  Sew your strips together, alternating colors.  Should look like this:

Fold in half, right sides together, pin and sew.  You should now have a 'tube'

Leave your 'tube' inside out and pin your red circle in place and sew on.

Now your 'tube' has a top!

To make your rim, sew the 2 white circle together around the outside edge.  Turn right side out and press at the seam.  Topstitch around that edge.

With the hat inside out, pin the unfinished inner circle to the inside of the bottom of the hat.  Sew in place. ( or you can pin the rim around the outside of the hat when it is turned right side out-just make sure your seam will be on the inside!)

Now my kids won't be the only ones in school without a hat on Friday!  (my 5th grader will still be the 'only one' without a cell phone though!)

Note: I have made 2 of these and they fit all of my kids.  (They range in ages 2 1/2-11 )  If you think you may need a larger or smaller one, just adjust the measurements slightly!

Now only 2 more to go! Of course my little man has to have one too!  And we will have our own party at home with lots of books and movies!

Glittery Shamrock Canvas

In case you missed my Friday Feature on Fireflies and Jellybeans, here it is!

A fun craft I just finished for St. Patrick's Day!

To make my Glittery Shamrock Canvas, you will need:

An artist canvas, mine is 10x10
      Green craft paint
Mod podge, I used both matte and glossy finish
    Green Glitter
Silver sequins
Cut out of shamrock  (just draw an outline and cut the shape out)
A little patience....

Start by painting your canvas.  It doesn't have to be perfect as most of it will be covered.  Make sure to paint the edges well though.

Let dry.

Cut out your shape.  And lay your pattern on your canvas.  If you need to tape the edges down, go ahead.  Now cover your shamrock opening with Mod podge.  Lay it on thick!

Then cover with glitter until well coated.   Shake off and reapply mod podge  and glitter if you have any bare spots.

Remove pattern and let dry a bit.
I did the next step a little at a time.  Coat an area of your canvas with mod podge.  Cover with sequins.
Do the same to the rest of the canvas a little at a time.  You will need to shake your canvas a few times to make sure to get off any sequins that are not sticking.  Once it is covered, let dry.

Apply a coat of glossy mod podge over the whole canvas.  Do not brush the mod podge on, just use your brush and dab it on all over to cover.  Let dry again.
I just love the way it looks in different lighting!

A Need to Organize! Ribbons!

I need HELP!

This is my ribbon storage tub.  I love these tubs and use them all around the house, but I am not proud of this system.  When I need something, half of the tub ends up on the floor or counter, then thrown back in.  There is absolutely NO organization here.  There are 2 layers of ribbon spools.  The top layer  is a complete MESS!  There are odd pieces of ribbon thrown in, some ric rac, and yes a small shoebox with buttons and other odds and ends.

So tell me, show me, if you would, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR RIBBON???  ( I know the buttons need to find a place of their own....)

What a difference baskets can make!

I have never been one to like having a TV in my living room.  I want a quiet, relaxing room.  So we have always had our TV in the family room downstairs.  But since our move, we just don't have the room downstairs to play as much.

So we just went with it, and turned my (semi) quiet living room into our family movie room and video game room.  We have so much more room!

But....
I just couldn't handle the mess.   Dvds and video games everywhere! (this was actually taken on a good day. )

Bring on some lined baskets and a little organization and it makes a HUGE difference!

I used this Video Tutorial for my basket liners.

This was not my first time making these liners.  I made some about a year ago for my desk shelves.   It's a great tutorial, easy to follow and you don't need a pattern.  You can customize it to fit any size basket!

Hoo are you?

NightOwlCrafting

Here's a little bit more about me:

1. Where do you usually have your thermostat set at in the winter?
This old rental house doesn't have a traditional thermostat. We have a gas stove in the living room and one downstairs too.

2. What room do you tend to put off cleaning until last?
My room and bathroom. They are kinda out of the way and no one goes in there anyways!

3. Do you like to clean with music on or off?
Music makes everything funner! I like to pull up Pandora or plug in my ipod!

4. When do you take time to blog?
I usually get some done during nap time and then after the kids go to bed.

5. How much time do you spend looking at other blogs a week? Probably too much! I love to see others projects and get inspiration.

Now YOU go click on the button and link up!

Family Nite Fun: Sock War!!!

1-2-3-4, I declare a Sock War!!!

We had so much fun wrapping up our family night by having a sock war!  Such an easy game.  No game board, no planning, just lots of fun and laughs!

Mom usually tires first, but the kids could totally play all night long!
We start by kneeling in a circle and hit the floor as we all chant, "1-2-3-4, I declare a sock war!"
Then all craziness breaks loose as you scramble to be the last one with a sock left on!
Even the little ones have fun!  My 2 yr old actually had more fun hiding all the socks under the couches as they came off!
The older kids are good about 'letting' the little ones get their socks.

What are you waiting for?  Get your socks on, gather your family around and have a blast!
