Early last year, I bookmarked this tutorial and added it to my never-ending
To-Do list.
And just recently I read
this post by Kaysi @ Keeping it Simple.
She totally reminded me and inspired me to get this project done. She made 2 of them, plus another skirt, and has a newborn baby (who she also made a skirt for)
I picked some cute material and ribbon at Walmart (spent under $7!) and got to work. I read through each of these tutorials, and used ideas from each to create my pattern.
For an adult size, you need 2 fabrics, about 3/4 yard of each and mine took about 5 yards of ribbon.
I also made one for my daughter. She wears a size 5/6.
.
For a child, you need 2 fabrics, about 1/2 yard of each and about 4 1/2 yards of ribbon.
I will be using my daughters measurements for this tutorial. (there will be pics from both her skirt and mine, so don't let the fabric confuse you!)
For the width, take your waist measurement and add 2 inches for seam allowance.
Miss K's waist is 21"+ 2" = 23" wide. BUT! I chose to angle my skirt a bit, so I added an additional 2" to each side, for an additional 4 "(23+4 =27" wide)
For the length, just measure from your waist to your knee, or however long you want it. Miss K needs 14" and an extra 2" for hemming. So total length is 16"
So I cut 2 pieces, 16" x 27"
To angle it, fold eachpiece in half (this folded piece will measure 16" x 13 1/2", or the length by half the width)
Measure the top from the cut edge 2" and mark it. Use a long ruler and cut from that mark to the bottom corner.
You should now have 2 pieces of the same size. Mine are 23" across the top and 27" across the bottom.
Next, hem both top and bottom of each piece. Fold over and press 1/2" then fold over again 1/2" and press. Stitch.
Pin ribbon to the bottom hem on each piece. And sew in place. I sewed close to the edge on both top and bottom of ribbon.
Do the same for the waist, except on 1 piece, leave a 15" tail of ribbon on each side and start and end your stitching about 1" from the edge.
Fold the ribbon in and pin to the inside so you don't catch it while sewing the 2 pieces together.
Place the 2 pieces, with right sides together and sew down each side using 1/2" seam allowance. Turn right side out and press the seams flat,
Measure in about 6" at the waist, on both sides and sew together. (Pin and check to see that you can get it over your hips)
