Corduroy Jumper Finished (Thanks Mom!)

My mom was able to come visit us for a few days last week, and was a HUGE help in finishing up some of my many projects.

Like this Jumper I started back in November for Miss K. ( I know....but I also know you have projects like this laying around!)

This was made from a pattern. ( McCalls M5694)  I have decided that patterns and me just don't mix.  I think I'd rather make my own or follow an online tutorial.

Back in November, I had it all cut out and had started some of the gathering and pressing. And then I just didn't want to finish it. So I made her a headband to match!

And then it all got put away. Mom to the rescue!  She finished it in no time, leaving only the hemming and the buttons for me to sew on.  I got off easy as I can do both of those things.

She also fixed a nasty hole in a sleeping bag, transformed a twin fitted sheet to fit onto my son's toddler bed, made his baby bear new jammies, all on top of helping me with the kids and dishes and......gotta love having Mom around!  Thanks Mom!  We miss you!  Hurry back soon!

Covered Notebooks for the BOYS!

First off, I apologize for being a little MIA this week.  Sometimes life just takes over and blogging gets out on the back burner.  But I promise, I am here, and I am crafting!  I even have Grandma helping finish up some projects too!

My older sons are constantly complaining that I never make them anything.  Boys are hard.  It's not like I can whip them up something cute for their hair or make them a fun new skirt.  They are 8 and almost 11.  They don't like 'cute' things like Miss K does.

A few months back, I made some fabric covered notebooks for me and Miss K and then helped a Young Women group at church to make some too.

So when a friend suggested I get some kind of "journal" for my boys, I knew exactly what I could do.  Of course they wouldn't want flowers or anything pretty.  So I made them plain and added their initials cut out of felt.  This was all done with my glue gun!   Absolutely no sewing at all!

NightOwlCrafting

1. Do you wear glasses or contacts, if so for how long?
I have worn both!  Got my first glasses in 8th grade.  Jr year I got contacts. Although I haven't for quite some time now, but have been thinking I need to get myself into the eye doctor soon.

2. What was your favorite board game as a kid?
I loved to play card games and Clue and Masterpiece.

3. What is a word that you use all the time?
Right now it's 'potty'  due to our potty training.  Don't know if I really use one word extensively though.

4. What is your favorite day of the week?
Saturday! (and I secretly like Mondays when the kids go back to school)

5. Did you graduate high school from the town you grew up in?I moved to the town
This is a NO for me.  We moved quite a bit growing up.  I graduated from a school that I only attended from 10th-12th grades.

My take on the Reversible Domestic Skirt!

Early last year, I bookmarked this tutorial and added it to my never-ending
To-Do list.

And just recently I read this post by Kaysi @ Keeping it Simple.

She totally reminded me and inspired me to get this project done.  She made 2 of them, plus another skirt, and has a newborn baby (who she also made a skirt for)

I picked some cute material and ribbon at Walmart (spent under $7!) and got to work.  I read through each of these tutorials, and used ideas from each to create my pattern.

For an adult size, you need 2 fabrics, about 3/4 yard of each and mine took about 5 yards of ribbon.

I also made one for my daughter.  She wears a size 5/6.
.
For a child, you need 2 fabrics, about 1/2 yard of each and about 4 1/2  yards of ribbon.

I will be using my daughters measurements for this tutorial.  (there will be pics from both her skirt and mine, so don't let the fabric confuse you!)

For the width, take your waist measurement and add 2 inches for seam allowance.
Miss K's waist is 21"+ 2" = 23" wide.  BUT!  I chose to angle my skirt a bit, so I added an additional 2"  to each side, for an additional 4 "(23+4 =27" wide)

For the length, just measure from your waist to your knee, or however long you want it.  Miss K needs 14" and an extra 2" for hemming.   So total length is 16"

So I cut 2 pieces, 16" x 27"

To angle it, fold eachpiece in half (this folded piece will measure 16" x 13 1/2", or the length by half the width)

Measure the top from the cut edge 2" and mark it.  Use a long ruler and cut from that mark to the bottom corner.

You should now have 2 pieces of the same size.  Mine are 23" across the top and 27" across the bottom.

Next, hem both top and bottom of each piece.  Fold over and press 1/2" then fold over again 1/2" and press.  Stitch.

Pin ribbon to the bottom hem on each piece. And sew in place. I sewed close to the edge on both top and bottom of ribbon.

Do the same for the waist, except on 1 piece, leave a 15" tail of ribbon on each side and start and end your stitching about 1" from the edge.
Fold the ribbon in and pin to the inside so you don't catch it while sewing the 2 pieces together.

Place the 2 pieces, with right sides together and sew down each side using 1/2" seam allowance.  Turn right side out and press the seams flat,

Measure in about 6" at the waist, on both sides and sew together.  (Pin and check to see that you can get it over your hips)
