Mr. Pumpkin Head

We just didn't have the time this year to carve a pumpkin.  Let alone 4 pumpkins.  So I found these cute little Mr. Potato head type pieces to make faces on the pumpkins.  I also had gotten a couple pumpkin tattoos for the older boys, but then they used the left over pieces and put faces on the other side of their pumpkin.

My 2 yr old keeps telling me, "my punkin looks silly!"

Wishing you all a FUN and Safe Halloween!

Little Square Pin Cushion!

I just whipped a few of these up and think they turned out cute!

Pin cushions have been on my TO DO List all year long.  I have several ideas saved and keep saying, "someday, I'll make one."  Well today I did.  I didn't make one that I had bookmarked, but one that just kinda came to me as I was making bean bags this week and thinking of other things I could make with my scraps.

Wanna make one?  It's SUPER easy and takes less than 15 minutes!

You will need.....

2 pieces fabric 4"x 4" square
Polyfil stuffing
about 20" of 1/8" ribbon
Needle with large eye for ribbon
Button

Cut your fabric.  I chose to use denim for the bottom of each one.  Did one that was all denim too, but I am sure any cotton scraps will work.  Start by sewing your 2 pieces of fabric, right sides together and leaving an opening on one side for stuffing.  I used a very small seam so I didn't have to trim them down.    Clip your corners and turn right side out.   Stuff it full with polyfil and sew the gap closed.

You should have a little square pillow.

Now take your ribbon and thread it through the needle.  Push the needle down through the center of the pincushion, leaving about 5" of ribbon on top.

Bring the ribbon around one side of the pincushion and back down thru the center.  Do this for each side so it looks wrapped like a gift box.  Secure the ends with a few stitches.

Sew on a button on the top side in the center.

This one is all mine!  I love purple and think its so cute!

These others I will be using as gifts.

And probably whip up a few more too!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Anyone who knows my family well, knows there is nothing we like better than cookies! (Chocolate Chip and Oreo reign supreme)  Over the last couple weeks, I have been perfecting my Pumpkin Chocolate chip Cookie Recipe.  It's a combination of my moms recipe, a recipe from allrecipes.com, and a tip from a friend!  And boy, do they disappear fast!  (I was lucky enough to get 1 lousy picture before the herd descended!)

Ingredients

* 1 cup canned pumpkin
* 1 cup white sugar
* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 1 egg
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoons baking powder
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon milk
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
* 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
* 1 cup milk chocolate chips

Directions

1. Combine pumpkin, sugar, vegetable oil, and egg.  Mix well.  Stir in dry ingredients and mix well.

2.  Stir in milk, vanilla and chocolate chips.

3. Drop by spoonful on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for approximately 10 minutes or until lightly brown and firm.  Enjoy!

New Friends: Decor Roomies!

Meet Chelsea and Allison. The creative hands and minds from Decor Roomies.

They have lots of fun decorating ideas and crafts.  And lots of ideas on a budget too!  One of my favorites is their Canvases for all Seasons

 I think they are gorgeous!

A little Q&A.....

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Chelsea: I think Chelsea would say that her pet peeve is clutter. She is always finding ways to stash and organize our clutter so it stays hidden, yet still accessible.
Allison: I can’t stand when I am running for something or when others are later. I just can’t understand it. Sadly, sometimes I do run a bit late.

Are you a morning person or more of a night owl?
Chelsea: Definitely a night owl! Chelsea stays up until 1 or 2 AM quite often and gets caught up on homework, HGTV, and also thinks of craft ideas. She also enjoys sleeping in on the weekends.
Allison: I have a horrible time waking up in the morning, but when I do I get a lot done. Sometimes I get a burst of energy at nighttime and suddenly find myself behaving like a night owl… those nights are pretty rare though.

Name 3 adjectives to describe yourself.
Chelsea: organized, dependable, and caring
Allison: creative, generous, and ambitious
And now here's a little project strait from the Roomies!

A few weeks ago, this photo became an inspiration! Our
friend Ashton got this idea from another blog and decided to make herself an
earring display. It turned out great and was a less than $10 dollar project
(way less!).

Decor Roomie Allison wanted to make a jewelry stand out of
tree branches… but there aren’t many “good” trees in the apartment complex and
what would the neighbors think!

After taking a look at Ashton’s photo, I (Allison) got to digging and
recalled that I had a frame hiding under my bookshelf. It was supposed to be
for artwork from the Hallmark factory in Kansas City that I got from a service
trip excursion. I never got it in the frame the way I wanted/pictured it.  Then I just kept finding stuff to make the Jewelry Board and it took me 15 minutes to do the whole thing!

Here’s how:
- Picture frame (pick your size, Wal-Mart and Target  and DT have good deals)
- Cork Roll
- Cork Squares OR Foam Display board
- Spray Adhesive
- Exacto Knife OR Scissors
- Sewing Pins
- Fabric (Optional)

1)  Remove the glass and backing from the frame.
2)   Depending on what materials you are using…
aLay out your cork squares and make sure they fit
your frame and trim with the exacto knife.
b. Cut your foam display board to size using the
exacto knife.

3) Generously apply your spray adhesive to the
backing of the frame and quickly apply either your cork squares or foam board.

4) Depending on what materials you are using…
a.  Cut your thin cork roll piece to size using the
exacto knife.
b  Cut your fabric to slightly cover the edges of
your backing using scissors.
5) Generously apply your spray adhesive to the cork
or foam on the backing and quickly apply either your cork roll or fabric.
6) Insert your backing into the frame and secure.
7) Use sewing pins to hang your necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc.

Total cost for me :$7 (WAY WAY WAY cheaper than buying one)
Cork Squares: $1.97 on clearance at Joann Fabric
Cork Roll: ~$2 leftover half from another project
Frame: $3 (but FREE really since I got it forever ago!)

This would also work as just a bulletin board, which I am
thinking of doing to replace the one I have had for the past 3 years of
college. The one that says “I <3 Chelison – Val xoxo NOT Derek” in purple
ink that won’t come off :( I even got two frames from work!

This also works well as a present for the holidays! Don’t be surprised
if this is what some of you get :)

Yours Bejeweled,
Chelsea & Allison

Thanks Girls for sharing with us!  To see more of Chelsea and Allison, head on over to Decor Roomies! I hear they are planning a giveaway once they up their followers!

Sewing with a pattern: Tips and Tricks....

It has been quite a few years since I sewed using a pattern. But a couple weeks ago when Jo-ann's had patterns for 99 cents, I couldn't resist! But now, I hate to admit it,  I am a bit intimidated to start my project.  But, I did sit down this morning and cut out my pattern pieces.

Then I did a little googling to ease my mind, and was very disappointed in what I found.  So I thought I would share these wonderful tips with you.

The first tip I read is totally not in my plans:

"It is best to gently iron the pattern pieces on a very low, cool setting to further diminish wrinkles"

I haven't ever ironed my pattern pieces....maybe I need to rethink this one? Or just go for it?

And some of the other finer points I found-And just let me tell you, after reading these, I am so not intimidated anymore! It's gonna be a breeze!  After all, I have learned all I could!
  • Choose a simple pattern for a first-time sewing project that has few seam lines and few pattern pieces.  Don't try anything that has to be lined with another fabric  (whew!  I am not lining anything!)
  • For sewing your first pattern, don't buy expensive fabric because you may not be able to fix mistakes.  (even though its not my first pattern, I did get my material at 50% off!)
  • Read the user guide before starting the project. (check!)
  • Determine the right side and wrong side of the fabric. The wrong side is the fabric worn against the body once the garment is completed. Use a pin to mark the wrong side of the fabric. (Boy am I glad I read this one!  That would have been a fashion disaster!)
  • Have a good sewing book such as the "Reader's Digest Guide to Sewing" or other well known text on the subject. Vintage and older publications are fine too. (I sure hope my Singer Sewing Essentials is up to the task!)

Now this post wouldn't be complete without a very important list of things you'll need:

  • Pattern
  • Strait Pins
  • Pin cushion or container to hold your pins
  • Fabric shears
  • Paper scissors
  • Tailors Chalk or tracing wheel for marking
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread and bobbin
  • Large, smooth cutting surface
  • any notions called for on your pattern instructions
I sure hope I didn't miss anything!  But I do need to share 1 more tip that I thought was pure genious....

  • If you have small children, you'll need to watch pins and scissors like a hawk. Also -- kitties just LOVE playing with (shredding) tissue patterns. You've been warned.

Hope you're all having a great fall weekend!
